06/12/13 - The Wack Album by The Lonely Island

I will freely admit that Incredibad and Turtleneck & Chain are two of my favorite albums of the past decade, and I will also freely admit that I pretty much stopped watching SNL after Andy Samberg left. No doubt I'll watch it again at some point, if there's a host I like or something, but that's besides the point. We're here to talk about the newest offering by Jorma, Akiva, and Andy: The Wack Album.

Did I honestly like it? Absolutely, the humor is still there, rammed home by the time the final track ends. Is it as strong as Incredibad or Turtleneck & Chain? Not quite. Personally I found the album to take a little while to really find its pace. Not that long, mind you; by the time the track Diaper Money started, I was enjoying it pretty well. But because it takes that time to get started, it suffers a bit. Turtleneck and Chain had me from the word go: once it started, I couldn't stop listening.

It's also kind of a drag that the best song on the album for me was one that had been released as a single some time ago: 3-Way (The Golden Rule). Again, I will freely admit that Dick in a Box and Motherlover were among my favorites from previous albums (all-time favorite being, of course, Jack Sparrow), and I am not really a fan of Lady Gaga either, but it really boils down to that combination of Samberg and Timberlake.  I wish I could explain it better, but oh well.

Again, it's not that I don't like this album, I do, I really do! There's lots of classic TLI stuff in there like Semicolon, Spring Break Anthem, and I F**ked My Aunt...but it's just not quite as strong. Well, here's hoping that their 4th album is stronger.

(Also it figures that I grabbed the copy that didn't have the DVD with music videos included. Dammit.)

My rating: 7/10
